Cruise day transfers from Manchester to Liverpool and Southampton

Cruise days run to a timetable you can’t change.

A cruise holiday starts with getting to the ship. Unlike a flight, you usually get a boarding window from the cruise line rather than a single departure time, and if you miss the ship there is no "next one". We take customers from Manchester to cruise terminals regularly, mostly Liverpool and Southampton, and this is how we plan those days.

Start with your cruise documents

Before you book anything, look at your cruise documents or the cruise line's app. You want to know:

  • which port and which terminal you sail from
  • your boarding or check-in time slot
  • the latest time you can board
  • any rules on luggage, such as labels and how many cases you can take

Cruise lines often give each passenger a time slot to spread out the queues. Aim to arrive at the start of your slot, not the end. If something goes wrong on the road, you still have time.

Liverpool Cruise Terminal

Liverpool's cruise terminal is on the waterfront at Princes Parade, close to the Pier Head. From Manchester city centre it is usually around an hour by road, sometimes a little more in traffic. From the west side of Greater Manchester, like Wigan or Warrington, it can be quicker.

The waterfront can get busy, especially when a big ship is in and there are events in the city centre. We allow extra time on cruise days and plan the drop-off around your boarding slot.

Liverpool is a good choice if you want a short trip to the ship. You can be home in under an hour after you get off.

Southampton

Southampton is the UK's busiest cruise port, and many of the biggest ships sail from there. It is a long way from Manchester, around 220 to 240 miles. In normal traffic the drive usually takes around four to four and a half hours, and it can be more on a busy day.

Southampton has several cruise terminals, spread across the docks. They are not next to each other, so you must know which one your ship uses. It is in your cruise documents. Add it to your booking and the driver will take you straight there.

Planning a Southampton pickup

For a ship with boarding from midday, a pickup in Manchester at around 6am or 7am is common. We will suggest a time when you book, based on your address and the day. Some people prefer to go down the day before, stay overnight and take a short trip to the port in the morning. We can take you to a hotel instead.

Luggage on a cruise

Cruise passengers usually carry more luggage than people flying, because most cruise lines don't limit cases in the same way airlines do. Formal clothes, shoes and a fortnight's packing add up. When you book:

  • tell us exactly how many cases and bags you have
  • choose an estate car, a people carrier or an executive people carrier if you have a lot
  • for groups, an 8 seater or 16 seater bus keeps everyone and the luggage together

Put your cruise luggage labels on before the driver arrives. At the terminal, porters normally take the cases from the drop-off area, and you see them again in your cabin.

Travelling with other couples or family

Cruises are often booked by groups: family celebrations, friends travelling together or several couples sharing. One vehicle for everyone usually works out well. Our Mercedes V-Class executive people carrier (or similar) is a comfortable choice for small groups on a long trip, and the minibuses suit larger parties.

Disembarkation day

Getting off a cruise ship takes time. Passengers usually leave in groups, and you get a time from the ship before the last night. Then you collect your cases in the terminal and go through any checks.

When you book your return, tell us the ship's name and the arrival date. Give us your disembarkation time as soon as you know it; a quick call or message from the ship is fine. The driver will wait in the area for collections, and if you add meet & greet (£5) they will meet you with a name board where the rules allow.

From Southampton, you will be on the road for a few hours, so a comfortable car makes a difference after a long holiday.

Cruises from other ports

We also cover other UK cruise ports, such as Dover, Tilbury and Portsmouth. The planning is the same: check your terminal and boarding window, tell us your luggage, and allow plenty of time.

A cruise day checklist

  1. Check port, terminal and boarding slot.
  2. Book your transfer early, especially in summer.
  3. Tell us the number of passengers and cases.
  4. Label your luggage the night before.
  5. Keep passports, tickets and medicines in a bag that stays with you.
  6. Book your return and give us your disembarkation time.

If the ship is late back

Ships sometimes arrive late because of weather or delays at the port. If that happens, call or message us as soon as you know. We will move the pickup. On the outward trip, if the cruise line changes your boarding time, tell us and we will change the pickup to match.

Combining a cruise with a hotel night

For Southampton in particular, some customers book a hotel near the port the night before so they are not relying on a long drive on the morning of departure. That is a sensible choice if you are worried about traffic, or if you are travelling with older relatives who would rather split the journey. We can take you to the hotel on the day before, and the hotel or a short local trip gets you to the ship in the morning. On the way home, we collect you straight from the terminal.

Paying and booking

The price is fixed when you book, and we'll tell you before you book if any parking, drop-off or toll charges apply. Payment is by card, online when you book. Online bookings need at least eight hours' notice, but for cruise days we recommend booking as soon as your cruise is confirmed.

Enter your address and the cruise terminal and you will see the price straight away. Book your cruise transfer online, or call us on 0161 660 4006.
