Manchester to Heathrow by road: what to expect

Heathrow is around 200 miles from Manchester.

Heathrow is the UK's biggest airport, and some routes and airlines are only available from there. When our customers need to fly from Heathrow, the choice is usually between the train, driving and parking, or a transfer. We do this journey regularly, so here is an honest guide to it.

How far and how long?

Heathrow is on the west side of London, roughly 200 miles from Manchester. In normal traffic, the drive usually takes around three and a half to four and a half hours. It depends heavily on the time of day, roadworks on the M6 and M1, and traffic around London.

Very early starts tend to give the best journey times. Friday afternoons and bank holiday weekends can be much slower.

The route

There are two main ways south:

  • The M6, M42 and M40. This goes down past Birmingham and then along the M40 towards London, joining the M25 near Heathrow. It is often the most direct route for the west side of London.
  • The M6 and M1. This heads down the east side of the Midlands, then joins the M25 near Watford and goes round to Heathrow.

Our drivers check the traffic before they leave and on the way, and choose the route that is moving best. If a toll road such as the M6 Toll saves time, we'll tell you before you book if any parking, drop-off or toll charges apply.

Planning your pickup time

For a long-haul flight from Heathrow, airlines often recommend arriving around three hours before departure. Add the drive, and then add a buffer for traffic. As a rough example:

  1. Flight at 2pm, airline suggests arriving by 11am.
  2. Drive of around four hours in daytime traffic.
  3. Add 45 minutes to an hour for delays and a short stop.
  4. Pickup around 6am.

When you book, put in your flight number and we will suggest a pickup time based on your address and the day you travel. If you are worried about cutting it fine, we would always rather leave earlier.

Heathrow terminals

Heathrow has several terminals, and they are not all close together. Make sure you know which one your flight uses. It is shown on your booking or in your airline's app. Add your flight number to your booking with us and we will check the terminal beforehand.

Heathrow has a drop-off charge for cars using the forecourts outside the terminals. We'll tell you before you book if any parking, drop-off or toll charges apply.

Car or train?

The train from Manchester to London is fast, but it takes you to Euston, which is not near Heathrow. You then need to cross London to get to the airport. That can mean the Underground, another train, or a car from the station. With a couple of cases and children, it can be a long day.

A transfer takes longer in pure travel time, but it is door to door. You load the bags once outside your house and unload them at the terminal. For families, groups, people with lots of luggage, early flights or anyone who finds crossing London stressful, a car is often easier. For a solo traveller with hand luggage, the train may suit better. It depends on you.

Cost per person

A transfer is priced per vehicle, not per person. For one person, the train may be cheaper. For a family of four or a group of eight, a single car or minibus can compare well with buying everyone a rail ticket. Enter your details in the booking form for an exact price.

Comfort on a long trip

Four hours is a long time in a car, so choose the right one:

  • Executive car (Mercedes E-Class or similar): more room and comfort for one to three passengers.
  • Mercedes S-Class or similar: our most comfortable car for long trips.
  • Executive people carrier (Mercedes V-Class or similar): space for a small group and their luggage.
  • Estate car or people carrier: good for families with holiday cases.
  • 8 seater or 16 seater bus: for groups.

Drivers are happy to stop at services on the way. If you have small children, mention it when you book so we allow for a break.

Coming home from Heathrow

For the return, add your inbound flight number. We follow the flight and the driver adjusts for delays. At Heathrow we strongly suggest meet & greet (£5). After passport control and baggage reclaim, the driver is waiting in arrivals with a name board and walks you to the car, which saves trying to find each other in a very large airport.

Common questions

Can you take me to a Heathrow hotel the night before?

Yes. Many people with early flights prefer to stay near the airport the night before. Put the hotel address as your destination when you book.

What if my flight is cancelled and I need to come home?

Call us on 0161 660 4006. If you have already been dropped off and your flight is cancelled, we will do our best to arrange a car back as soon as we can.

Do you stop on the way?

Yes, if you want to. Most drivers will suggest a stop on a trip of this length. Just ask.

How much luggage can I take?

It depends on the car. As a rough guide, allow one large case and one small bag per person in most vehicles. Tell us exactly what you are bringing in the booking form and it will show only the cars that fit. If you have extra items like golf bags or skis, add a note.

Can several of us share the car?

Yes, and on a trip this long it often makes sense. The price is for the vehicle, so a family or a group of friends sharing a people carrier or a minibus splits one fare between them. Tell us the number of passengers and cases and the booking form will show the vehicles that fit.

Book your Heathrow transfer

Enter your address and choose Heathrow and your terminal. You will see a fixed price, we'll tell you before you book if any parking, drop-off or toll charges apply, and you can pay by card online or to the driver. Book your Heathrow transfer online, or call 0161 660 4006 to talk it through.
