What time should I leave for an early flight from Manchester?
A 6am flight usually means a 3am alarm.
A big share of our airport work happens between 2am and 5am. Holiday flights from Manchester often leave early in the morning, and a 6am departure means being at the terminal well before 4am. This guide explains how we work out a sensible pickup time, and how you can make that early start less painful.
Start with the airline, not the drive
The drive is usually the easy part. The bit that catches people out is what happens once they reach the terminal. So we always start from the airline's advice and work backwards.
Every airline sets its own rules, and they change, so check yours. As a rough guide, many airlines suggest you arrive about two hours before a short-haul flight and about three hours before a long-haul flight. Bag drop and check-in desks often close 40 to 60 minutes before departure, and some long-haul flights close earlier than that.
Look for three times in your booking or the airline's app:
- when check-in and bag drop open
- when bag drop closes
- when the gate closes
The one that matters most is bag drop closing. If you miss that, you won't fly, however close the gate is.
Security at Manchester
Security queues at Manchester vary a lot. On a quiet Tuesday in November you might walk straight through. On the first Saturday of the summer holidays, very early in the morning, the queues can be long, because lots of flights leave at the same time.
Early mornings in school holidays are the busiest. If you are flying then, give yourself extra time. It is much better to sit with a coffee airside than to stand in a queue watching the clock.
How long the drive takes at that hour
One good thing about early flights is that the roads are usually quiet. Before 5am, the M60 and M56 are normally clear and journey times are close to the best you will get all day. As a rough idea:
- From south Manchester, Stockport, Cheadle, Sale or Altrincham, it is often 15 to 25 minutes.
- From the city centre and Salford, around 25 to 35 minutes.
- From Bolton, Bury, Oldham or Rochdale, usually 35 to 45 minutes.
- From Wigan, Leigh or further out, plan for 45 minutes or more.
Roadworks are often done overnight, though, and that can mean closures and diversions just when you want a clear run. We check for planned closures before your pickup.
Working it out: an example
Say you live in Bolton and you are flying to Spain at 6:10am, from Terminal 2.
- Your airline suggests you arrive two hours before. That means 4:10am.
- It is the school holidays, so add 20 to 30 minutes for queues. Now you are aiming for about 3:45am.
- The drive from Bolton at that time is around 35 to 40 minutes. Add 10 minutes for loading bags and any delay. That gives a pickup time of around 2:55am.
We would probably suggest a 2:50am or 3:00am pickup. That sounds brutal, but it means you arrive calm, with time to spare.
Things that should make you leave earlier
- Bags to drop. If you only have hand luggage and have checked in online, you can cut it a little finer.
- Children. Toilet stops, buggies and car seats all slow things down.
- Special assistance. Allow extra time to meet the assistance team.
- Long-haul flights. These often have earlier bag drop deadlines and document checks.
- Bad weather. Fog, snow and ice slow everyone down. In winter, if there is a weather warning, we may ring and suggest leaving a bit earlier.
Making the early start easier
Most of the stress on an early morning is avoidable. A few things help:
- Pack the night before, and put the cases by the front door.
- Check in online as soon as you can and save boarding passes on your phone.
- Lay out passports and documents in one bag that goes with you, not in the boot.
- Set two alarms, and give yourself 30 minutes before the pickup time.
- Tell us about access. If your house is hard to find in the dark or the street is narrow, put a note in the booking.
- Keep your phone on loud. The driver may call when they are outside.
Will the driver be on time?
Our drivers plan to be outside a few minutes before the booked time. We would rather wait for you than make you wait for us. If anything happens on the road, we will call you.
Online bookings need at least eight hours' notice. For an early flight, that means booking by the previous evening at the latest. In practice, most people book weeks ahead, especially in school holidays when we are busiest.
What about getting home?
If you book a return, add your inbound flight number. We follow the flight and adjust if it is early or late. Late-night arrivals are common in summer, and having a car already arranged is a relief when you land tired. If you want the driver to meet you inside the terminal, add meet & greet for £5.
School holidays and bank holidays
The busiest mornings of the year at Manchester are the first days of the school holidays, especially in summer, at Easter and at October half term. Lots of flights leave between 6am and 8am, and everyone arrives at once. On those days we would always add extra time, even if you have checked in online.
It is also when we are busiest. If you know your dates, book early so you get the pickup time and the car you want.
If something goes wrong on the morning
Sometimes things don't go to plan. A child is sick, a passport can't be found, or the alarm doesn't go off. If you are running late, ring us straight away on 0161 660 4006. If your flight is cancelled or moved the night before, let us know as soon as you can so we can change the pickup.
